What are the Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE)?

Trinity Graded Examinations in Spoken English are internationally recognised as one of the most prestigious series of English language examinations for testing speaking and listening skills. They take the form of a one-to-one conversation between the student and a highly qualified Trinity examiner who comes from the UK to conduct the assessment.

The examinations provide an accurate and reliable assessment of a student's ability to communicate face to face in English.

There are twelve grades, from absolute beginner to full mastery. Reports are given to all candidates and successful candidates receive their certificates from London within 6-8 weeks of the examination.

What is involved in the exams?

The examiner guides a conversation to allow the student to demonstrate their competence in using the language appropriate to the grade of the exam. At each level the student carries out a number of realistic speaking and listening tasks that demonstrate their fluency and accuracy in spoken English. The GESE syllabus clearly sets out what students need to do at each level.

Who are the exams for?

Trinity Graded Examinations in Spoken English are suitable for students of any age, whatever their level. Learners may be school or college students, working professionals, or those looking to improve their English skills for their own personal development.

GESE exams are especially applicable for people who need to demonstrate their ability to converse well in English for work, travel or study purposes.

*The Hong Kong English Medium of Instruction (EMI) Secondary Schools Association recognises the following grades as evidence that a student's English is suitable to study in an EMI secondary school:

Grade 4 - Minimum level of English required
Grade 5 - Good level of English
Grade 6 - Exceptional English level

* Students must be aged 7 or above to enter for a Trinity GESE examination
