Level *: Schedule:
* Students are grouped according to their age and level, and the examination for which they are preparing.
As applicable
  • Once or twice weekly x 1.5 hours
  • 2 - 5 times weekly during school holidays

Trinity College ESOL examinations are for non-native English speakers who wish to have their level of competency in English assessed and officially certified.

There are two types of examinations available:

Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE)

  • Graded Examinations in Spoken English evaluate how well a candidate can understand and speak English within the relevant grade. There are twelve grades/levels in four stages - Initial, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced, and candidates may enter the exam at any level according to their ability.
  • Assessment takes places on a one-to-one basis with an English examiner. Candidates are assessed in general conversation as well as their aptitude to communicate on topics of their own choice. In assessing the candidates' performance, importance is attached to their understanding, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and coherence in the language.

Integrated Skills in English examinations (ISE)

  • Integrated Skills in English examinations assess all four language skills - Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading - interacting with each other as they do in the real world. There are available at five key levels which are linked to the Council of Europe's Common European Framework for Modern Languages (CEF.
  • Each ISE examination has the same overall assessment structure. It consists of three components: Portfolio - a collection of the student's written work; Interview - a face to face conversation with a Trinity examiner (very similar to the GESE examination); and Controlled Written examination - taken under formal examination conditions.

The emphasis of our preparation courses is on developing overall competence, gaining fluency in conversational skills, becoming familiar with the examination structure, as well as boosting self-confidence. It will help your child to deliver his/her very best on the big day.
